Cat Edwards has over 13 years experience as a qualified Civil Celebrant, specialising in Funeral Services.
In Australia, we acknowledge that not all people hold a religious focus during their lives, they may be spiritual but not religious, an atheist or agnostic. Civil Ceremonies honour the right to religious freedom and give people the structure of a Service with as much or as little or no religious content as they desire. Human Beings, no matter what our thinking about the way of the Universe, need ceremonies at important junctures in our lives, to mark an occasion and give organisation to our feelings and to honour the loved one who means so much to us. A Civil Funeral Ceremony provides this framework and gives people who don’t identify with religion peace of mind and heart in the midst of a challenging time in their lives.
A Civil Funeral Celebrant has a similar but different role to a priest or clergy-person. The Funeral Celebrant is there to support the family, write and perform the ceremony and hold space for the mourners to feel comfortable to openly grieve. From the time I receive the phone call from the Funeral Director about your loved one, to the moment I drive away from the completed Service, you are ‘my family’ and will be treated as such. No question is too simple or difficult and if your phone call is missed, I will endeavour to ring you back asap. My personal spiritual views are not discussed unless you bring them up and ask. The Service is about your family and your loved one and how they saw the way of the world and the Universe. No expectation or judgement is cast over anyone, except for the common sense of cordial and civil behaviour by all before, during and after the Service. As the Funeral Celebrant, it is my job to hold your hand during this time and to bring the Service together so as it flows and honours and celebrates the life of your loved one.
